Royal China excels in a diverse array of Chinese dishes, ranging from delicate dim sum selections to robust noodle and dumpling creations. The menu reads like a journey through China’s most cherished comfort foods: hand-pulled noodles bursting with fresh flavors, fluffy pork dumplings that seem to melt in your mouth, and savory pork belly buns that offer a perfect harmony of rich and soft textures. Signature highlights include the spicy yet balanced General Kao's Chicken or Shrimp, where crispy bite-sized morsels are glazed in a sweet and fiery sauce that dances on the palate. The Dry Stirred Beef stands out as an all-time favorite, combining tender slices of beef with just the right touch of sweetness and heat, an enduring recipe since the restaurant’s inception in 1974.
The menu is thoughtfully curated for variety and dietary preferences, featuring gluten-free options like the Chicken or Pork Flat Rice Noodles (Ho-Fun) and Thin Rice Noodles (Mifun), stir-fried with crisp vegetables for both texture and color. The Beef Noodle Soup provides a comforting bowl of warmth, while the Kung Pao King Oyster Mushrooms offer a vegetarian delight packed with bold, spicy notes. For those seeking classic accompaniments, the Egg Drop Soup and the Crab & Cheese Wontons are quintessential favorites that satisfy every time.

Whether you’re stopping by for a leisurely lunch special that includes rice, soup, and an eggroll (as Marci Peschke enjoyed with her memorable veggie dumplings and Jasmine tea), or indulging in a dinner featuring tender Mongolian Beef atop vermicelli, this restaurant consistently delivers on flavor and authenticity. Travelers like Melissa Kern have experienced its bustling yet efficient service and rave about standout items like their enormous, perfectly crisp crab rangoon and classic egg rolls — handcrafted and free of greasy heaviness.
Royal China’s reputation for quality and tradition is well-earned. Royal China doesn’t so much operate inside Preston Royal as it anchors it. Like one of those old Dallas constants that makes you feel, irrationally, that the whole shopping center would float away if it ever closed. For more than 50 years, it has been the dinner-time default for Preston Hollow families, mine included, nearby office refugees, and the “we need something that’s going to satisfy” crowd. The first thing you notice (after the smell that immediately rewires your brain toward comfort) is the service. It’s on point in that old-school way that doesn’t require a performance. Water arrives before you realize you’re thirsty. Plates disappear right as you start plotting where the next one should land. And then there’s the owner (George), circulating like a benevolent mayor, checking in, making eye contact, making sure you feel less like a table number and more like a regular—even if you’ve never been before. It’s hospitality that doesn’t ask for applause because it’s been doing this longer than most Dallas restaurants have been alive. Start with the steamed dumpling sampler. It arrives piping hot and perfectly cooked, the kind of heat that fogs your glasses and makes you slow down for a second out of self-preservation. The dumplings are tender and flavorful, built for dipping, sharing, and that moment when everyone at the table goes quiet because chewing suddenly becomes the priority. But the real plot twist is the spicy table mustard. This isn’t “zippy.” This is mustard with intent. A perfect blend of mustard and HELLFIRE. Sharp, sinus-clearing, and weirdly addictive in the way a dare becomes a habit. Then there’s the chicken curry noodle soup (my wife’s favorite), which tastes like it's being made the way it’s supposed to be. Fresh curry, layered spices, and that warm, savory depth that makes you sit back and consider canceling the rest of your evening plans. And you can’t walk out without paying respects to the hits: Happy Family, that glorious, maximalist parade of proteins and vegetables that somehow manages to be both abundant and precise, or the hand-pulled sweet and spicy Dan Dan noodles (get the flat ones), or even the he moo shu chicken. In all honesty, we've never had a dish we didn't like at Royal China. Royal China is a local culinary gem, the kind Dallas doesn’t always protect enough. It’s not trying to be trendy. It’s trying to be great ...and it is. If you’re in Preston Hollow, or anywhere within reasonable dumpling radius, consider this your reminder: go.
Royal China is always delicious! They have an excellent lunch menu with specials. Specials include rice, soup and an eggroll. The veggie dumplings were exceptionally good. We got the Jasmine tea. It came in a lovely pot. Our server was fabulous! I am making plans to go back!
It was good) The hand-pulled noodles and dumplings were fresh and full of flavor—I especially liked the dan dan noodles and soup dumplings. The atmosphere was cozy, and it was fun to see the chefs making noodles by hand. It’s a great spot for tasty and authentic Chinese food.
While traveling through town on a road trip we were able to get in just under an hour before they closed and the place was full. They had no issues seating us right away, service was quick and so friendly. We were still out by closing. The crab rangoon was the biggest I have seen and so delicious. The egg rolls were amazing in that they are just like you would expect but instead of greasy or frozen, everything was super fresh and delicious. I got sesame chicken which was made to order and literally melted in my mouth. I was able to choose light or dark meat and chose dark. It tasted a little different than most sesame dishes but in the best way. Husband got the yellow curry and loved it. The side of fried rice was on point as well. The portions are big, so I brought them home and leftovers were great. I have saved the location as a favorite so any time I am going through I can find it again. I also texted my local friends to insist they go there as well, regardless of how far they have to drive. :)
Had a good lunch at Royal China. I had high expectations as I’ve been to Asia numerous times. It’s decent food. Price is normal for this area in Preston Hollow. Service was good but not stellar. Waiter had too many tables. He was kind. I had the shrimp dumplings to start. They were excellent and only $12. I had a raspberry mule to drink that was also great. Then for the entree I had General Kaos chicken. It wasn’t super hot when it came to my table. It also wasn’t spicy. I had to request more chili oil. The lunch entree was mid, decent but I’ve had better. If I return, it will only be for dumplings.
